Red pine (also known as Norway pine) is a common native tree in the northern region of Minnesota. It grows on dry, well-drained sandy loam and silty loam soils---places that are not as nutrient-poor as jack pine (P. banksiana) can tolerate. It also grows on thin soil on bedrock. Avoid crowding to lessen the risk of fungal diseases.
